As part of the ongoing Development Plan meetings Councillor Power submitted a motion requiring that in all new housing developments with more than 100 units, at least a minimum of 10% of said units must be age friendly accommodation.
The Fingal Development Plan sets out the vision for how Fingal should develop over the life of the Plan while ensuring compliance with national and regional policy. The Development Plan presents an opportunity for the general public to shape Fingal for the future when it comes to important issues such as housing, economic development, community and heritage.
Speaking on the motion, Cllr Power said;
“Living well in later life is important for all of us. Older people’s expectations are changing. The ‘new old’ are healthier, more active, and more technologically engaged. To meet these changing
expectations requires a wider mix of age friendly housing options and healthcare supports to suit diverse lifestyles. By requiring that 10% of housing units in new developments are age friendly we are ensuring that our housing provision is better equipped to deal with addressing these diverse lifestyles.”
“Research shows that the majority of people want to remain in their own home as they age. This desire however is often challenged by their home not being suitable, their needs become more
pronounced, their financial means decrease or their mobility declines. My motion sought to provide more housing to support older people to live in their own home with dignity and independence, for as long as possible and I am delighted that Fingal County Council have incorporated this into the Development Plan.”
